Surgeon General Fears Social Media Impact on Youth

Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy raises concerns about the unknown effects social media has on children and teenagers’ mental health, urging tech companies to be more transparent and prioritize user wellbeing. With 40% of children aged 8-12 using social media, despite platforms’ age requirements, research suggests a correlation between excessive social media use and increased depression, anxiety, suicide, and loneliness among the youth.

Social media’s impacts on our youth are concerning, but perhaps the real question is why kids aged 8-12 are even on these platforms in the first place. Meanwhile, tech giants should prioritize fixing their liberal double standards before overpolishing their user experience.
