Oregon Teacher Fought Gunman, Shares Message

On October 15, a 16-year-old former student opened fire inside a special needs classroom at Silver Rail Elementary in Bend, Oregon. Three children and a teacher were killed, and teacher Becky Drury and a 7-year-old girl were wounded and survived. Police Chief Mike Krantz credited teacher Cassidy Schutz with throwing her cellphone at the shooter and wrestling for his shotgun. More than two weeks later, she released her first public statement through Bend-La Pine Schools, describing deep sadness and asking for time and privacy to heal.
