1898 Bucksport Murder Still Unsolved

Daily Mail · first seen 2d ago · 2 outlets

Sarah MacDonald Ware disappeared on September 17, 1898, and her body turned up about two weeks later among alder bushes off Miles Lane in Bucksport, Maine. Her skull was fractured. The Daily Mail, drawing on a University of Maine English professor's Conversation piece, revisits the case and the folklore around it, including ghost accounts it calls unverified.

William Treworgy, a man Ware had worked for, was tried in 1902 and acquitted. No one has ever been convicted, and the theories about who killed her remain unproven. Her skull was kept at the Hancock County Courthouse until it was buried at Oak Hill Cemetery in September 1998.

Ware's family and Bucksport have lived with this for over a century. A killing deserves a real answer, not a ghost story.
