George Floyd-Era Police Watchdog Chair Charged

Hassan Bennett chairs Philadelphia's Citizens Police Oversight Commission. Prosecutors say he sold a witness's name and an unredacted arrest report in an attempted murder case to inmate Thomas Scott, who allegedly vowed to "blow down" the witness and offered Bennett $500 for the paperwork. Investigators say they heard Bennett read details from the report on prison calls. Bennett faces felony charges of intimidation of a witness, conspiracy, criminal use of a communication facility and bribery. He was convicted of second-degree murder in 2008 and acquitted at a 2019 retrial. He could not be reached for comment.
The commission says Bennett is on leave and recognizes the seriousness of the matter. A witness should never have to wonder who got hold of their name.
