San Francisco U Axes 90-Year 'Don' Mascot

USF is putting its Don mascot out to pasture, the mustachioed fella in the Spanish-style hat who has been on the sidelines since 1932, starting with the spring 2027 semester. In comes a wolf, but the teams keep the Dons nickname, which is like trading your pickup for a bicycle and keeping the truck payment. A 2022 student government resolution called the old figure a symbol of the exploitation and subjugation of California's Indigenous people, and a petition with more than 400 signatures agreed. President Salvador Aceves said, "we believe the time is right to revitalize our image and embrace a new mascot." Back home that's a fresh coat of paint on the same leaky roof.
