NYC Marathon Runner Rachel Apa Dies After Collapse

I'll just tell you what happened. Rachel Apa, 24, a former Bucknell field hockey player, collapsed in Central Park about two miles from the finish of Sunday's New York City Marathon. Onlookers, among them hospital social worker Michaela Nicholas, gave her CPR before medical staff arrived with a defibrillator. Her father, Steve Apa, says she was pronounced dead at Mount Sinai at 9:40 p.m. and that rhabdomyolysis was the cause. She was raising money for the Parkinson's Foundation in honor of her grandfather, who died in 2022. The New York Road Runners said they were deeply saddened, and it's the first runner death at the race since 2024.
