Alaska Senate Race Roiled by Dirty Tricks Claims
Let's be quiet for a second and get this one right. Ahead of the midterms, the Alaska Senate race is tangled in a federal dispute over certification. A federal judge dismissed a Justice Department lawsuit seeking to block certification, and the department has appealed. It has also confirmed a criminal investigation but has not said which potential crimes are being examined.
The New York Times reported on efforts to recruit a same-named candidate, Dan J. Sullivan, who finished third in the primary with 2.5 percent of the vote and has done almost no campaigning. Democrat Mary Peltola denies involvement in those efforts.
Texas, Michigan and Maine are close as well, and control of the Senate could turn on these races. Voters deserve a clean count, a straight answer on the investigation, and an outcome nobody has to dispute.
