Helicopters Collide Below Everest Base Camp, 1 Dead

Two helicopters collided Tuesday while attempting to set down near Mount Everest base camp, according to officials. At least one person is dead and two more were injured. The man who died was a 47-year-old tourist from India, according to Solukhumbhu district administration officer Bhupendra Thapa. An injured passenger from New Zealand is being transported to Kathmandu for treatment. The crash happened at Pheriche village, at 13,780 feet, during Nepal's popular trekking season, when the aircraft were carrying trekkers. My thoughts are with the dead man's family, with the injured, and with the crews working at altitude to get everyone the care they need. The final toll may still change.
