Co-pilot's Friend Describes Her Last Moments
A Learjet 60 flying from Austin, Texas, to the Bahamas crashed in Palm Beach County, Florida, killing all nine people on board. Co-pilot Nathalia Filgueiras, 20, can be heard in audio reporting a rapid descent and a Mayday call. Captain Jeffrey Gregory was 55.
A longtime friend of Filgueiras said the audio was very hard to hear. Weather data indicates the jet flew into a fast-growing storm, then the crew radioed about ice and heavy turbulence. Investigators are still working out whether the pilots understood the danger ahead and whether the horizontal stabilizer broke off. The NTSB is focused first on recovering the cockpit voice recorder and major wreckage.
Our hearts are with every family waiting tonight. The cause has not been determined.
