86-Year-Old Sailor, Dog Rescued Off California
I'll just tell you what happened. Fox News reports that an 86-year-old sailor and his dog were rescued after their disabled boat was spotted about 460 miles off San Diego. He was sailing the Willow Wind from Astoria, Oregon, toward American Samoa, and had been out of touch since August 20. Authorities were alerted October 24 that he was overdue, and an emergency beacon alert helped a Coast Guard aircrew find the boat. The motor vessel Grand Orion took the pair aboard, and a Coast Guard helicopter flew them to San Diego, where he was taken to Scripps Mercy Hospital for evaluation. Our thoughts are with him and the crews who searched. A working beacon and a crew that answered it did their job. Tell someone ashore your plans.
