Roy Cooper is going to the Senate, beating former RNC chairman Michael Whatley for North Carolina's open seat, according to NBC News and NPR. NBC calls it the first Democratic Senate win in the state since 2008. Cooper takes over for retiring Sen. Thom Tillis, and Democrats get a flip they need in their hunt for Senate control. Cooper ran on the cost of living and skipped a contentious primary, which is the smartest thing a politician can do: talk about groceries and hope the press skips the hard questions. Fair's fair. A top Republican super PAC pulled its ad money in the closing weeks, and that's a lesson for our side, not a punchline. Strip the spin off and here's what's left: a Democrat won a seat we had, and the national press just remembered North Carolina has a Senate race.
