Gov. Roy Cooper speech | picked for: Roy Cooper, candid

Roy Cooper is headed to the Senate. The Associated Press called it Tuesday evening at 8:23 or 8:24 p.m. ET, depending on whose clock you trust, after Cooper beat Trump-backed Michael Whatley for the open seat Thom Tillis is leaving. With 56% counted, Cooper had 66.8% to Whatley's 31.6%, per the Washington Examiner. Democrats hadn't won a North Carolina Senate seat since Kay Hagan in 2008, so they waited a long time to get this one. Cooper told the NY Post that the president anointed Whatley as the candidate. Around here, a man who blames the other fellow for picking his opponent is usually still hunting for the excuse on the drive home. I'd argue with a fence post too if somebody had just handed me a Senate seat.
