Kemp Rebuffs Calls to Redraw Georgia Map

Gov. Brian Kemp will not call a special session to redraw Georgia's congressional maps or curb executive branch powers, saying the voters have spoken. He had called one for June 17 after Louisiana v. Callais weakened federal Voting Rights Act protections, but Speaker Jon Burns and other GOP leaders wouldn't take up redistricting, citing time to study the ruling, pending litigation and public input. Study is what a statehouse says when it means no, and that dog won't hunt. Democrat Keisha Lance Bottoms won with 54.3% to Rick Jackson's 45.7% and takes office in January, when Kemp's term limits run him off the place. Kemp left a session on the table before then for possible budget matters, which is the kind of door I'd keep an eye on.
