Hamawy: From Terror Trial Witness to Congressman-Elect

Voters in a deep-blue New Jersey district handed Democrat Adam Hamawy about 70% of the vote anyway, despite Republicans hammering his past ties to jihadist figures. He was not charged with wrongdoing in either matter, and he calls the criticism bigoted and unfair. In Washington, not charged apparently means spotless. The Washington Examiner reports he testified in 1995 as a defense witness for Omar Abdel-Rahman at a terrorism trial. The paper quotes him saying, "it wasn't the only thing he spoke about." I graded answers like that for years. That one earns a C-minus and a visit to my desk after the bell. Jurors weren't swayed, and Treasury later shut down the charity behind his 1994 Bosnia work. Voters can decide what that's worth.
